Club coaching
Junior club coaching re-commences this week for the Spring term and all juniors involved in same should already have received confirmation of their coaching day and timeslot. If not, please contact the grounds person immediately. We hope you enjoy the new term and remember to put what you learn into practice through the junior ladders and the social tennis events.
Senior Ladders
There has been limited activity over the last few weeks in the ladders so we would encourage all players to dust off their rackets and to organise their matches over the coming weeks. The mixed doubles ladder concludes for this month on Saturday 21 January, while the singles ladder runs until Monday 30 January. As always if you wish to join or drop out of either ladder please advise the grounds person or leave a note on the noticeboard in the club house.
International competition
Following on from lifting her National Indoor title, Sinead Lohan travelled to Pontevedra in Spain to compete at the Torneo Internacional Junior de Pontevedra. Sinead got off to a great start defeating the No 1 seed Ksenija Sharifova of Russia 6-4 7-5 in the first round of the girls singles event, progressing to the semi-final stage where she was defeated by Alexandria Stiteler of the USA. Sinead is competing in the Sanxenxo International Junior Tournament in Pontevedra this week and we wish her continued success.
National Indoor Champions
On New Year's Eve, at the David Lloyd Riverview Centre in Dublin, we are delighted to advise that sister and brother Sinead and Morgan Lohan were successful in winning the National Indoor Championships in their respective events. Sinead, aged 16, beat her Federation Cup team mate Lynsey McCullough in the Women's Singles Event by a scoreline of 6-0 6-0. Morgan, aged 13, won the Boys U14 Singles Event by a scoreline of 7-5 6-0. Huge congratulations go to Sinead and Morgan on their fantastic achievements.
We would also like to congratulate our other junior members - Harry Walshe, Harry Fox, Kate Finnegan, Eleanor Power, Alyson Bermingham and Caoimhe Duffy-Niblock - who competed so well throughout the week's competition and Willie Reynolds who coaches all eight players. Well done to all involved.
Friday Tennis for >10s
Tennis for the over 10’s is now changing from Saturday afternoon to Friday afternoon from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Under 10s activities will still be run on Saturday mornings.
Junior Regional and Provincial Matchplays
Well done to all of our juniors who participated in the recent Regional Matchplays. Tramore Tennis Club hosted the Under 12 age group and the standard of tennis on display on the day was superb. The players who qualified will compete in the Provincial Matchplays this coming weekend and we wish them every success on the day.
Saturday Social Tennis
Saturday social tennis for juniors continues at the club and we would encourage all juniors to come along to have fun and practice their tennis. 8 - 10 year old beginners/improvers are catered for from 11am to 12.30 pm, while the 10+ age group of improver/advanced players is from 3 to 5pm. There is no need to register in advance - simply come along on the day.
Senior Ladders
The first month's mixed ladder has come to its conclusion this week. If you have not played this month but wish to be included for next month, or if you are on the ladder but no longer want to be included, please leave a note on the noticeboard in the clubhouse or advise the grounds person. The singles ladder has recently been posted on the noticeboard so we would encourage participants to try to organise and play their matches by the end of the month.
Munster Winter League
Congratulations to our Winter League Grade 5 team of Sandra Merity, Susan Devereux, Gerry O'Sullivan and Padraig Scott who won 3 of their 4 matches against Ballinlough last weekend, giving them a great start to this year's campaign. Their next fixture is away to a Sunday's Well team in Cork and we wish them continued success throughout the coming months.
